After the fatal Kundmala bridge collapse, fears grow over another deteriorating bridge on the Bhima River in Pune’s Khed taluka. Despite severe damage, it remains open to traffic, risking disaster.

Pune | June 16, 2025: A day after the tragic bridge collapse at Kundmala in Maval, which claimed four lives and injured six, concerns are mounting over another dangerous structure—this time on the Bhima River in Khed Taluka, near the Chas Kaman Dam.

This 18-year-old bridge, which once connected villagers and drew tourists after the dam’s water release, has now become a looming threat. The structure has suffered multiple collapses over the years. Despite repeated patchwork repairs, its condition has worsened, with railings missing, deep potholes, and visible cracks at various points. Alarmingly, vehicular traffic still continues, putting countless lives at risk.

In a desperate attempt to prevent accidents, local residents have marked dangerous sections with stones and tree branches, but no barricades or official warnings have been put in place by the administration. With crowds of tourists expected again during the monsoon season, the risk of another tragedy mirrors what unfolded in Kundmala.

Questions are now being raised: Is the administration waiting for another fatal disaster to act? Locals say despite the visible deterioration, the dam authorities and district administration have turned a blind eye to repeated warnings.

On Sunday, the bridge over the Indrayani River at Kundmala collapsed suddenly under the weight of tourists. Four people died, six were injured, and several were swept away by the strong current. Thanks to the quick arrival of NDRF teams, 38 people were rescued. However, Monday’s rescue efforts will be handled by private teams, as no missing persons have been reported and the NDRF has not been called again, confirmed Maval Tehsildar Vikram Deshmukh.

As the monsoon intensifies and tourist footfall rises, the Bhima River bridge could become the next tragic headline unless urgent action is taken.
