Following a temple desecration incident in Pune’s Mulshi taluka, PUCL alleges Muslim families faced intimidation and business boycotts. Police urge citizens to report concerns and ensure peace is maintained.

Pune | July 10, 2025: A disturbing situation is unfolding in Mulshi taluka of Pune district, where several Muslim families have reportedly vacated their rented homes following the vandalism of a temple idol by a mentally unstable youth. The incident took place at the Nageshwar Temple in Paud village, where the idol of Annapurna Devi was desecrated — sparking widespread anger across the region.

However, what began as public outrage has allegedly spiraled into targeted pressure and social ostracism of minority communities in nearby areas like Pirangut and Paud.

PUCL Raises Human Rights Concerns

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a civil rights organization, has submitted a formal petition to the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, expressing serious concern. The petition, signed by PUCL Chairman Justice (Retd.) G.D. Parekh and other representatives, claims that calls for economic and social boycott of Muslim traders and families have surfaced in the area.

According to PUCL, banners have been put up in some places urging residents to boycott businesses run by minorities. In some instances, signature campaigns have been carried out to reinforce this appeal — a move PUCL says violates constitutional values of equality and secularism.

Role of Police and Local Response

Rural Police Superintendent Sandeep Singh Gill acknowledged the issue and urged citizens to directly contact the police if they face harassment or pressure. “If anyone has any complaint or concern, we are here to help. Immediate action will be taken,” he stated.

He added that similar incidents had occurred in May in Paud, where police promptly removed provocative banners and organized peace meetings with local villagers. After these efforts, minority families and traders who had earlier left began returning, indicating a temporary restoration of confidence.

Social Harmony Under Strain

The temple desecration incident has unfortunately become a flashpoint for communal tension, with some groups reportedly exploiting the situation to marginalize minorities. The local police, however, maintain that no complaint has been officially filed yet regarding threats or forced business closures, and they have appealed for community cooperation and peace.

PUCL, meanwhile, is pushing for the state government’s intervention to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of those affected, especially in villages where tenants and business owners feel threatened.
