Ahilyadevi Holkar Was the Pioneer of India’s First Women’s Military Unit: CM Fadnavis

CM Devendra Fadnavis praised Ahilyadevi Holkar as a pioneer of India’s first women’s military unit and artistic revivalist,  publicizing ₹ 681 crore for Chaundi’s development at a youth event in Pune.

Pune, 31 May 2025: Pune, 31 May 2025 – “Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar wasn’t only an ideal Rajmata but also the visionary behind India’s first independent women’s military unit, ” said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the’ Yuva Prerna Samvad’ program organized in  festivity of Ahilyadevi Holkar’s 300th birth anniversary at Modern College Ground, Pune.

Highlighting her multifaceted legacy, the Chief Minister praised Ahilyadevi’s contributions to administration, public welfare, and cultural revival. “She realized early on that foreign invasions weren’t just political attacks—they also targeted our cultural roots. Through her efforts, sacred sites like Kashi Vishwanath and the 12 Jyotirlingas were revived,” he said.

He also stated , “By studying Ahilyadevi’s irrigation and agriculture policy, current economic policies can be given direction”. Fadnavis emphasized that while Indian history often centers around the Mughal Empire, many valiant rulers like Ahilyadevi Holkar haven’t received their due recognition. He stated that her legacy should be made known globally. He also shared that a ₹681 crore plan has been initiated for the development of Chaundi, her birthplace.

Drawing parallels between historical and modern leadership, Fadnavis credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for empowering women in defense roles under initiatives like ‘Operation Sindoor’. Yet, he underlined that Ahilyadevi was the first in India to form an all-women military unit and even established a self-reliant arms manufacturing unit.

The event saw the presence of prominent BJP leaders and youth representatives including Anup More, Vikrant Patil, Shankar Jagtap, Yogesh Tilekar, Rajesh Pandey, and Karan Misal.
