Pune| May 30, 2025: In a landmark moment for Indian athletics, Avinash Sable clinched the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Athletics Championships on Thursday, clocking a season-best time of 8:20.92 seconds. With this feat, Sable came the first Indian in 36 times to  eclipse the  tribune in this event, cementing his  heritage in the sport.

This is Sable’s second medal at the Asian Championships, having won a silver in the same event back in 2019. The last Indian to win gold in the men’s steeplechase at this championship was Dina Ram in 1989, while Herbal Singh was the first to do so in 1975.

Sable, who was the pre-event favourite, lived up to expectations. He trailed Japan’s Yutaro Nine until the final lap but surged ahead with a brilliant late push to grab the gold. Yutaro clocked 8:24.41 to take silver, while Qatar’s Zakaria Elhami finished with bronze in 8:27.12.

Meanwhile, in other events, the Indian men’s 4x400m relay team — comprising Rins Joseph, Dharamveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkhinalil Saji, and Mohit Kumar — qualified for the final with a heat-topping performance, clocking their best-ever timing. They edged out China (3:06.79) and hosts Korea (3:10.05) to secure a comfortable berth in the finals.

In the women’s  10,000 m final, India’s Sanjeevani Jadhav and Seema put up  estimable performances, finishing fifth and sixth independently. Sanjeevani clocked 3308.17,  nearly followed by Seema at 3308.23, both marking their season-stylish  sweats.

The race,  still, was dominated by Kazakhstan’s Daisy Jepkemy, who  settled gold with a stunning 3048.44, while Japan’s Ririrak Hironik( 3056.32) and Mikuni Yada( 3112.21) completed the  tribune.

Sable’s  major run and the relay  platoon’s strong showing highlight a promising line for Indian calisthenics on the international stage.
