Pune | May 26, 2025: Unseasonal and heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across Baramati taluka, causing a major breach in the Nira Dawa Canal at Pimpli Limtek, leading to massive flooding in farmlands and residential areas. The water has gushed into people’s homes, submerged roads, and inflicted severe agricultural damage, prompting a rapid response from Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who arrived early this morning for an on-ground inspection.
The canal breach, triggered by the high-velocity flow from continuous downpours—comparable to a cloudburst—created pond-like conditions on the Pandharpur highway, severely affecting movement and damaging infrastructure. The impacted regions, such as Kambleshwar village, experienced water accumulation, mud buildup, and some structures collapsing. JCB machinery has been utilized to remove obstacles and support rescue and relief operations.
In light of the destruction, Ajit Pawar canceled all his scheduled programs in Mumbai and took immediate stock of the situation. He directed the Water Resources Department to shut down the Nira Dawa Canal, ordered a structural audit of damaged buildings, and instructed revenue officials to conduct panchnamas and provide relief to affected farmers and residents.
The Baramati administration, led by Tehsildar Ganesh Shinde, has issued a public appeal urging citizens to;
Stay away from riverbanks and canals
Avoid stepping out unless necessary
Not fall for any rumors
Cooperate with the administration
Contact emergency services if needed
The premature arrival of the monsoon in Maharashtra in May has already impacted many regions, with Pune district bearing the brunt. Baramati’s crisis has now highlighted the fragility of rural infrastructure under unpredictable weather patterns.
