BJP leader and industrialist Gopal Khemka was shot dead near Patna’s Twin Towers. Family blames police for delay. Opposition slams law and order. This follows the unsolved murder of his son.
PATNA, JULY 6: In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about law and order in Bihar, senior BJP leader and prominent industrialist Gopal Khemka was shot dead near the Twin Towers in Patna on Friday night. The murder took place in a high-security zone, barely 300 meters from the Gandhi Maidan police station, triggering outrage among locals and political leaders alike.
The incident occurred around 11:30 pm, when Khemka was returning home from the Patna Club, as per his routine. As soon as he arrived at the gate of his apartment near Hotel Panash, assailants lying in wait opened fire at him. The attackers managed to flee the scene without resistance.
Khemka was rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition, but doctors declared him brought dead. Following this, family members created an uproar, blaming the police for arriving at the scene over 90 minutes after the incident.
“This is a VIP zone, just minutes from the police station. If criminals can kill a businessman here and escape easily, then no one is safe,” said Santosh Khemka, Gopal’s younger brother.
Senior police officials, including the SP of Patna, reportedly arrived only after two hours, sparking massive criticism.
Shockingly, this is not the first tragedy to hit the Khemka family. Six years ago, Gopal Khemka’s son, Gunjan Khemka, was also shot dead in a separate incident in the Vaishali district’s industrial area. That case, too, remains unsolved, according to sources.
The recurrence of such a targeted killing has further rattled the business and political communities in Bihar.
Opposition leaders were quick to slam the Bihar government, questioning how such a brazen murder could happen in a VIP area under police surveillance.
“What is the Bihar Police doing? If criminals can kill a BJP leader in the heart of the capital, it shows complete failure of the system,” said a senior RJD leader.
The police have begun reviewing CCTV footage and conducting raids, though no arrests have been made as of now.
