Nashik | June 11, 2025: Allegations of corruption have rocked the reputed Namco Cancer Hospital in Nashik. A woman undergoing cancer treatment under the government’s Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana was reportedly asked to pay a bribe of ₹30,000 by hospital staff, despite the treatment being free under the scheme.

The incident has exposed the serious misuse of a scheme meant for underprivileged patients. According to the complaint, three employees — including the medical superintendent and two female staff members — demanded the bribe from the patient’s husband after the surgery.

The Anti-Corruption Department has begun a formal investigation, and all three accused are currently being interrogated. The hospital administration, however, has denied any wrongdoing and claimed confidence in the justice system, stating that the allegations are baseless.

This case has sparked outrage, especially as charitable trust hospitals are expected to provide affordable or free treatment. The state had already tightened rules for charitable hospitals after a similar incident of exploitation at Pune’s Mangeshkar Hospital. Yet, cases like Namco Hospital reveal that exploitation of the poor still continues.

Important questions are now being raised:

Government schemes like the Mahatma Phule Yojana are meant to ensure free treatment for the poor, but such incidents show how some hospitals exploit these very people. Strict action is now being demanded against the hospital to prevent such corruption in the future.
