The accident, which happened around 5:30 p.m. on a crowded Saturday evening, left some of them injured and revealed a horrific story of negligence. The driver, 27-year-old Jairam Mule, was arrested for suspected drunk driving, driving without a license, and the horrific accident.

Pune| June 02, 2025: The mayhem occurred when Mule, a Bibwewadi resident, hijacked a friend’s tourist cab for a joyride. The cab, with registration number MH13EP0354, was allegedly being driven in high gear when Mule lost control of the vehicle, running over a crowd of people at a roadside tea stall. Among the victims were young contenders whose aspirations were almost dashed with the act. Panic gripped the busy road following the accident, and onlookers rushed to rescue the injured.
Inquiries showed a chain of negligence. Mule, who is known to suffer from an eyesight issue, was not only uninsured but also drunk when the accident occurred. His fellow passenger, Rahul Gosavi, also 27, was just as drunk. The owner of the taxi, Digambar Shinde, also 27, was also implicated after it came out that he had left the keys in the car, making it possible for Mule’s reckless move to drive it for a spin. Shinde had left the cab in Bibwewadi to take a snack, not knowing his negligence would have such alarming repercussions.
Mule was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Sunday and was sent to magisterial custody, while Gosavi and Shinde were let off on bail. A medical examination confirmed the state of intoxication of both Mule and Gosavi, adding to the gravity of their act. The protest, filed by Sandip Kopade, a friend of the accused person, brought the matter to public attention, with it turning out that Mule and Gosavi are helpers in a chemist’s shop, which is an ironic touch to their disrespect for the safety of the public.
The taxi, a tourist cab, was not intended for such wanton abuse. The probe is still on to find out any other factor that led to the accident. Luckily, there were no deaths, but the injuries the victims incurred highlight the seriousness of the issue. The crash has generated grave concerns regarding road safety, illegal driving, and the risks of drinking and driving, especially in a city as dynamic and populated as Pune.
This accident is a grim reminder of the terrible cost of irresponsible driving. Pune tries to come to terms with the tragedy as the authorities call for tighter compliance with driving laws and greater public awareness to avert similar disasters in the future. The city comes together to stand with the victims, and the law takes aim at holding accountable those who put lives at risk in a fit of wanton abandon.
