Monsoon weakens after early arrival; yellow alert in Vidarbha. Rain delays advised sowing. Pre-monsoon rains damaged crops in Nanded, causing farmer losses. State-wide good rainfall expected post-June 12.

Pune, 31 May 2025 — After arriving 15 days early, the monsoon’s intensity is now decreasing. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon flow has weakened, leading to a drop in rainfall activity across Maharashtra.
While Vidarbha remains on yellow alert due to the possibility of rain, gusty winds, and lightning—especially in Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia—other parts of the state are likely to receive only light, scattered rain. A weakening low-pressure system from the Bay of Bengal that made landfall near Sagar Islands and Khepupara, Bangladesh, is said to be responsible for this shift.
As a result, IMD has advised farmers to avoid rushing into sowing activities, warning that monsoon progress will remain stalled until June 12. Rainfall in the first week of June is expected to be limited, but more widespread showers are likely in the second week.
Meanwhile, early heavy rainfall in May has already caused significant crop damage in parts of the state. Nanded district suffered losses when heavy rain burst the pods just days before harvest. Similar instances have been reported across the region, with affected farmers demanding government compensation through crop inspection (Panchnama).
