Washington | June 9, 2025: The United States is grappling with a renewed food safety crisis, as Salmonella bacteria have now been detected in eggs across multiple states, following similar outbreaks in tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers.
Salmonella Detected in Eggs
The egg industry, already struggling from supply issues due to avian disease outbreaks, now faces a new challenge as Salmonella has been found in eggs distributed in various US states.
Health authorities have ordered 1.7 million eggs to be pulled from retail stores after 80 people across seven states, including California, fell ill. At least 21 patients have required hospitalization.
Consumers have been urged to discard or return potentially contaminated eggs. The retrieved eggs will undergo disinfection by manufacturers.
What is Salmonella?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes Salmonella as a dangerous microorganism that can trigger diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours of ingestion. It poses a heightened risk for:
- Children
- The elderly
- Individuals with weakened immune systems
To reduce the risk of infection, citizens are advised to:
- Wash hands thoroughly
- Seek medical attention if experiencing severe symptoms such as fever or dehydration.
Salmonella Warning Extended to Tomatoes
In a related development, tomatoes have also been placed under a high-level food safety alert by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). On May 28, the FDA classified the tomato Salmonella outbreak as a Class-1 hazard — the most severe alert level.
Contaminated tomatoes, primarily sourced from Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, have been recalled. Several farms have voluntarily begun pulling tomatoes off the market.
Symptoms of tomato-related Salmonella infection include:
- High fever
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
Vulnerable populations — children, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity — face the highest risk.

The US is one of the world’s largest tomato producers, with cultivation spread across more than 20 states.
