Washington | June 9, 2025: The United States is grappling with a renewed food safety crisis, as Salmonella bacteria have now been detected in eggs across multiple states, following similar outbreaks in tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers.

The egg industry, already struggling from supply issues due to avian disease outbreaks, now faces a new challenge as Salmonella has been found in eggs distributed in various US states.

Health authorities have ordered 1.7 million eggs to be pulled from retail stores after 80 people across seven states, including California, fell ill. At least 21 patients have required hospitalization.

Consumers have been urged to discard or return potentially contaminated eggs. The retrieved eggs will undergo disinfection by manufacturers.

In a related development, tomatoes have also been placed under a high-level food safety alert by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). On May 28, the FDA classified the tomato Salmonella outbreak as a Class-1 hazard — the most severe alert level.

Contaminated tomatoes, primarily sourced from Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, have been recalled. Several farms have voluntarily begun pulling tomatoes off the market.
