Pune | June 5, 2025: A shocking case of fraud has been uncovered in Pune, where scammers operated a fake marriage racket using the name of renowned late social worker Sindhutai Sapkal. The racket involved calling unsuspecting families and promising them girls for marriage from her ashram—charging them a registration fee of ₹15,000 via online platforms like PhonePe and Google Pay.

The scam came to light after Mamta Sindhutai Sapkal received a tip-off and personally investigated the matter. On contacting the number used in the scam, she was asked to pay a gate pass fee and was even sent photos of girls—none of whom were affiliated with the ashram.

Realizing the extent of the fraud, Mamta lodged an FIR at Saswad Police Station. A case has been registered under Sections 319(4), 318(4), 356(2) of the Indian Justice Code, and Section 66 of the IT Act.

According to Pune Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill, this may be part of a larger statewide racket targeting families eager to find matches for their daughters and sons. He urged the public to remain cautious and avoid such misleading schemes.

This incident has not only raised serious concerns about cyber fraud but also highlighted how emotionally sensitive issues like marriage are being exploited by criminals.
