A fire broke out in the third coach of the Daund–Pune DEMU train this morning, sparking panic. No injuries were reported, but serious questions arise over railway passenger safety.
Pune | June 16 2025: A fire broke out early Monday morning in the Daund–Pune DEMU shuttle train, triggering panic among commuters. The incident occurred in the third coach from the engine, shortly after the train departed from Daund at 7:05 AM, as per its daily schedule.
Though no casualties have been reported, the safety concerns for railway passengers have once again come into question.
As thick smoke started filling the affected coach, terrified passengers began shouting and scrambling to escape. Scenes of chaos unfolded as commuters tried to save their lives, some covering their faces with handkerchiefs to avoid inhaling the smoke.
Eyewitness videos circulating on social media show passengers being evacuated as smoke billows out of the bogie. People can be heard crying out for help, with many visibly shaken by the sudden blaze.
Thankfully, prompt action from fellow passengers and railway staff helped prevent a major disaster. Authorities ensured that the passengers in the affected compartment were safely evacuated in time. However, this incident has raised serious concerns about fire safety protocols and maintenance of coaches, especially in daily shuttle services with heavy footfall.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials are expected to probe whether electrical faults or overheating could have led to the incident. Meanwhile, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and fire brigade were alerted immediately, and the situation was brought under control before it could escalate further.
Passengers and citizen groups have now begun questioning the readiness and condition of local trains, particularly in high-traffic routes like Daund to Pune.
