Five patients lost their vision after cataract surgery at a Navi Mumbai hospital. Police filed an FIR against two doctors over negligence, bacterial infection, and expired medical license. Investigation underway.

Vashi, Navi Mumbai | August 6, 2025: — A deeply disturbing incident has come to light from Navi Mumbai, where five patients reportedly lost their eyesight following cataract surgeries at a private hospital in Vashi. An FIR has now been registered against two ophthalmologists — Dr. Chandan Pandit and Dr. D. V. Pandit — for alleged medical negligence.

The matter came into focus after a 67-year-old man filed a complaint, supported by a report from the Thane Civil Surgeon which flagged clear lapses in medical care. According to this complaint, between December 2024 and March 2025, four other patients underwent similar surgeries at the same hospital and suffered identical outcomes — complete vision loss.

All five patients reportedly contracted a bacterial infection identified as Pseudomonas after surgery. The infection is believed to be the cause of the vision loss, suggesting possible lapses in sterilization and post-operative care.

An official from Vashi Police Station stated that, “The surgeries were conducted in a rushed and careless manner. Moreover, the primary doctor’s Maharashtra Medical Council license — mandatory for such procedures — had not been renewed at the time.”

This incident has triggered shockwaves across the medical fraternity and renewed public concerns regarding hygiene, licensing, and safety standards in private hospitals. The police investigation is ongoing, and further legal action is expected in the coming days.
