Mumbai | June 25, 2025 – A deeply disturbing incident has come to light from Mumbai’s Aarey area, where a 65–70-year-old woman suffering from cancer was found dumped in a garbage heap, allegedly by her own grandson.

The incident, which has shaken the conscience of the city, unfolded when locals spotted the elderly woman lying helplessly among waste and alerted the police.

When the police reached the spot and questioned her, the frail woman identified herself as Yashoda Gaikwad. In a choked voice, she told police, “I have skin cancer. My grandson said he cannot afford treatment, so he threw me here and left.”

Her statement stunned both the police and the gathered crowd. Locals were shocked at the cruelty and abandonment she had endured.

What makes the situation even more tragic is that when police tried to admit the elderly woman for medical treatment, two hospitals reportedly refused to take her in. Despite her condition and vulnerability, she was denied care, exposing the harsh reality of institutional insensitivity toward the elderly and poor.

The police have launched an investigation based on Yashoda Gaikwad’s statement. An FIR is expected to be filed against her grandson for neglect and abandonment. Authorities are also probing why hospitals refused her treatment, and whether this constitutes a violation of medical ethics and patients’ rights.

The incident raises critical questions about family responsibility, healthcare for the underprivileged, and the societal treatment of the elderly in modern urban India.
