CM Fadnavis orders action on illegal Bhiwandi warehouses after a fire incident. Unsafe warehouses to be shut, legal ones to be surveyed and regularized. Plans for secure logistics infrastructure underway.
Bhiwandi, 8 July 2025: In the wake of a massive fire in a chemical-laden warehouse in Val village, Bhiwandi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken a firm stand against unauthorized and hazardous warehouse constructions. Addressing the Legislative Council, Fadnavis announced that warehouses built without legal permission will be shut down, and criminal action will be taken against those responsible.
The fire incident occurred on Anjur Phata–Dapoda Road, destroying 12 warehouses. The warehouse involved in the fire was found to be entirely illegal, lacking both Shops and Establishments Department approval and chemical storage permissions.
Member Adv. Niranjan Davkhare, along with legislators Shashikant Shinde, Praveen Darekar, and Uma Khapre, raised the issue during discussions. In response, the Chief Minister stated that a joint team from the MMRDA and Revenue Department will survey all warehouses in the region to identify unauthorized structures.
Fadnavis warned that gram panchayat sarpanchs and secretaries who illegally authorize such structures will also be held accountable, and criminal charges will be filed against them. Warehouses that endanger human lives due to illegal construction or lack of safety compliance will face immediate closure.
While a separate zone for legal warehouse operations has already been developed in Bhiwandi by the MMRDA, those who haven’t regularized existing warehouses will be given one last chance to do so following the survey.
Recognizing Bhiwandi’s critical role in the national supply chain, Fadnavis also proposed setting up fire stations and using satellite-based geospatial technology to monitor logistics infrastructure. The Chief Minister directed the MSRDC and Industries Department to work with MMRDA in creating a modern logistics park along the Samruddhi Highway with all necessary safety features.
