Indian Railways will now install liquid handwash dispensers in sleeper coaches of long-haul trains, extending this AC-class facility to non-AC coaches to improve onboard hygiene through the Onboard Housekeeping Service (OBHS).

Pune | 07 June,2025: Indian Railways continues to enhance passenger comfort by extending key amenities traditionally reserved for AC coaches to non-AC sleeper coaches. In its latest move, the Railway Board has approved the installation of liquid handwash dispensers in sleeper coaches of long-haul Mail and Express trains.
Until now, this facility was limited to AC coaches. Recognizing the importance of hygiene, especially after the pandemic, the Railway Board has decided to introduce liquid handwash as part of the Onboard Housekeeping Services (OBHS) in non-AC reserved sleeper coaches as well.
“Liquid soap dispensers will be installed near wash basins inside sleeper coach toilets,” said a senior railway engineer. “These dispensers will be filled before the train departs and will be monitored and refilled as needed during the journey.”
This decision is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to raise cleanliness standards and improve passenger experience across all classes. Stations have already seen major upgrades in recent years; now, attention is shifting to enhancing facilities within trains, especially sleeper and general coaches.
Currently, OBHS is provided in various trains such as Premium Express, Capital Express, Shatabdi Express, Vande Bharat Express, Tejas Express, and selected superfast and Mail-Express trains. Now, many long-haul trains with OBHS will see this new addition.
Millions of passengers travel daily via Indian Railways, and such steps are aimed at offering a more hygienic and pleasant journey to all, regardless of travel class.
