India’s First Bullet Train to Cut Mumbai-Ahmedabad Travel Time to 2 Hours; Launch Expected by 2029

India’s first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will cut travel time to 2 hours by 2029. With 12 stations and rapid construction underway, coaches from Japan are expected by 2026.

Bhavnagar | August 4, 2025: In a major leap for India’s railway infrastructure, the country’s first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is nearing reality, with construction progressing rapidly. Once operational, the 508-kilometer journey will take just 2 hours and 7 minutes, drastically cutting down the current travel time. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this update during a public event held at Bhavnagar Terminus, Gujarat.

The bullet train project, touted as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream initiative, is being executed with high priority. Vaishnaw announced that the high-speed train will begin its journey from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and terminate in Ahmedabad, passing through key cities like Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara.

Major Highlights of the Bullet Train Project:

  • Distance: 508 kilometers
  • Travel Time: 2 hours 7 minutes
  • Stations: 12 en route, including BKC, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad
  • Infrastructure: Large culverts, steel and PSC (concrete) bridges, and river-crossing station buildings are under construction
  • Coach Imports: Bullet train coaches are expected to arrive from Japan in 2026
  • Expected Launch: Full passenger service rollout by 2029

The minister also emphasized that India is currently building an average of 12 km of new railway lines per day, showcasing the pace of development in the rail sector.

Additional Developments in Rail Services

During the same event, Minister Vaishnaw flagged off three new trains from Bhavnagar:

  1. Bhavnagar–Ayodhya Cantt Express (weekly)
  2. Pune (Hadapsar)–Rewa Superfast Express (weekly)
  3. Raipur–Jabalpur Express (daily)

The launch of these trains, along with updates on the bullet train, highlights the government’s commitment to expanding and modernizing India’s railway network for faster, safer, and more efficient travel.
