DPU Super Speciality Hospital in Pimpri creates history with India’s first dual organ transplant; 60-year-old patient recovers steadily after groundbreaking surgery

Pune | August 5, 2025: Marking a historic milestone in Indian medical history, DPU Super Speciality Hospital, Pimpri, successfully performed the country’s first simultaneous heart and kidney transplant on a 60-year-old patient. This rare and complex surgery represents a new frontier in multi-organ transplant care and highlights India’s growing expertise in advanced medical procedures.

The patient, who had undergone a kidney transplant in 2001, suffered a second organ failure in 2024. Alongside kidney failure, he developed dilated cardiomyopathy, rendering his heart severely dysfunctional. Dependent on dialysis and medications, he turned to DPU Super Speciality Hospital for a lifeline.

After a meticulous medical evaluation, a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) of specialists took the bold decision to perform a simultaneous transplant of both heart and kidney – an extremely high-risk and rarely attempted procedure in India. The surgery was successfully conducted on June 10, 2025, using organs from a single donor.

Post-operative care proved as critical as the surgery itself. Managing two different immunosuppression protocols required exceptional coordination. The MDT held daily briefings, closely monitored every physiological response, and adjusted treatments in real-time. As a result, the patient is now stable and gradually recovering under the dedicated supervision of the DPU Transplant Unit.

“This remarkable achievement is a symbol of our unwavering commitment to excellence in medical science,” said Dr. P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr. D. Y. Patil University. He lauded the hospital team for their “dedication and flawless execution in a surgery of such rarity.”

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. (Mrs.) Bhagyashree Patil, Pro-Chancellor, emphasized that this operation reflected not only medical advancement but also the institution’s “human values of hope and compassion.”

Dr. Yashraj Patil, Trustee and Treasurer, highlighted DPU’s commitment to “pushing the boundaries of modern healthcare,” calling the surgery a “testament to innovation and patient-first care.”

Dr. Rekha Arcot, Dean of DPU Medical College, underlined that the transplant’s success was rooted in “clinical precision, collaboration, and a strong patient-centric ethos.”

With this feat, DPU Super Speciality Hospital reinforces its status as a national leader in organ transplant innovations and sets a new benchmark for healthcare excellence in India.
