At a Mumbai event, Sakshi Kamble’s grieving mother questioned the selective justice system, alleging neglect in her daughter’s suicide case while high-profile cases receive quick response and media attention.
Mumbai | June 13, 2025: The tragic suicide of Sakshi Kamble, a young arts student from Beed, has taken a painful turn as her mother, Koyna voiced her anguish at a State Women’s Commission dialogue in Mumbai. Holding her daughter’s photo and weeping openly, she questioned the selective empathy shown in high-profile cases, contrasting it with the neglect faced by ordinary middle-class families like hers.
At the event, while there was significant discussion around Vaishnavi Hagavane’s case from Pune, Sakshi’s story was completely overlooked. “You see Vaishnavi’s mother’s tears, but what about mine? My daughter was harassed, blackmailed, and took her own life. Where do we go for justice?” cried Sakshi’s mother, unable to hold back her sorrow.
Sakshi, a student at Kesharbai Sonajirao Kshirsagar College in Beed, ended her life on March 14 in Dharashiv, allegedly after continuous harassment and blackmail by Abhishek Kadam, a classmate. Despite a delayed FIR and a 20-day wait for the accused to surrender, justice still feels distant. A female staff member Sheetal Kadam, allegedly involved, has also been named in the case.
After public protests, the original investigating officer, DySP Swapnil Rathod, was removed for inaction. Now, an IPS-level woman officer from Dharashiv is heading the probe. But 85 days later, Sakshi’s grieving mother still awaits accountability.
“Do you get justice only if you’re prestigious?” she asked, targeting not just the system but also political representatives. Despite Deputy Speaker Neelam Gorhe’s visit and directions to officials, local leaders like Pankaja Munde, Pritam Munde, and Namita Mundada have allegedly shown no concern.
Koyna’s piercing question at the gathering—“Where should we go for justice?”—now echoes as a challenge to Maharashtra’s institutions: Will justice truly reach every daughter?
