The Maharashtra government has decided to rename Islampur village in Sangli district to Ishwarpur, a long-standing demand of Hindutva organizations and local citizens. Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced the decision on the final day of the legislative session, confirming that the proposal has been sent to the Central Government for final approval.
Bhujbal stated that the state cabinet has approved the renaming and is now awaiting the Centre’s nod. The demand to change Islampur’s name had been raised consistently in recent years, with locals arguing for a name that reflects cultural and religious sentiments more aligned with their identity.
This renaming is part of a larger trend in Maharashtra. In recent years, several cities have undergone similar changes:
- Aurangabad renamed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
- Osmanabad renamed to Dharashiv
- Ahmednagar renamed to Ahilyanagar
These changes reflect broader efforts by the state government to reassert regional and historical identity, often driven by political and cultural motivations.
