Kajol received the Raj Kapoor Award on her birthday at the Marathi Film Awards, delivered a speech in Marathi, and subtly refused to switch to Hindi, saying, “Those who understand, will understand.”

Mumbai | August 6, 2025 —The Diamond Jubilee Ceremony of the Maharashtra State Marathi Film Awards, celebrating 60 years of honoring Marathi cinema, was held in grand style at Dome, SVP Stadium, Worli, on Tuesday evening. The event saw a glittering presence of stalwarts from the film industry.

Bollywood actress Kajol was honored with the Late Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award, making the moment even more special as it coincided with her birthday. In an emotional speech delivered in fluent Marathi, Kajol recalled how her mother, veteran actress Tanuja, had received the same award earlier. “Today my mother is sitting here, and I’m wearing her saree. There can be no bigger gift than this on my birthday,” she said.

Kajol’s graceful use of Marathi continued off-stage while addressing the media. When she was asked to speak in Hindi instead, she expressed subtle displeasure, remarking, “Now shall we speak in Hindi again? Those who want to understand will understand.”

The prestigious Lata Mangeshkar Award 2025 was presented to renowned ghazal singer Bhimrao Panchale for his contributions to music. Celebrated filmmaker and actor Mahesh Manjrekar received the 2024 Chitrapati V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award, while the Special Contribution Award under the same category went to acclaimed actress Mukta Barve. Veteran actor Anupam Kher was also honored with the 2024 Late Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award.

The ceremony reflected the richness of Marathi cinema and honored those who have significantly contributed to its growth over the decades.
