After 40 years of protests, Kolhapur finally gets a Bombay High Court circuit bench, starting August 18. It will offer temporary local justice access, easing burdens on citizens and lawyers.

Kolhapur | August 2, 2025: After nearly four decades of persistent demand and widespread protests, Kolhapur has finally secured a circuit bench of the Bombay High Court. Chief Justice Alok Aradhe has issued an official notification, confirming that the bench will start functioning from August 18 in the old court building in Kolhapur.

This development has sparked widespread celebrations among citizens and lawyers across six districts — including Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Solapur — who had long demanded local access to high court justice. The news marks a historic moment for the legal community in western Maharashtra.

What is a Circuit Bench?

A circuit bench is a temporary division of a high court established in remote areas to make justice more accessible. Unlike a permanent bench, which functions year-round, a circuit bench operates only during specified periods — a few days or months annually — depending on the volume and nature of pending cases.

Why is it important?

The primary aim is to ease the burden on the main court and reduce travel hardships for litigants and lawyers. By hearing cases locally, circuit benches bring justice closer to the people, saving both time and money. Although not a permanent solution, they play a crucial role in making the judiciary more inclusive and efficient.
