The Ladki Bahin Yojana faces heat as ₹357 crore from the Tribal Development Department is allegedly diverted for its funding. Despite denials by Revenue Minister Bawankule, a government resolution hints otherwise. The issue raises serious questions about government priorities and the impact on tribal welfare.
The Ladki Bahin Yojana, a centerpiece of Maharashtra’s political strategy, is once again in the spotlight—this time over a major funding controversy. Allegations have emerged that a staggering ₹357.70 crore is being redirected from the Tribal Development Department to support the financial backbone of this scheme, raising serious concerns about the program’s impact on marginalized tribal communities.
A recent Government Resolution (GR) has revealed that funds meant for tribal welfare are now being funneled towards the Ladki Bahin initiative, with monthly installments reportedly being deducted from the department’s allocation. This revelation follows similar fund reallocations earlier from the Social Justice Department, indicating a growing trend of resource diversion.
Despite the documentation, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. He insists that “the budget heads of tribal funds and the Ladki Bahin Yojana are entirely separate,” and that no cross-utilization is possible. According to him, such claims are a deliberate attempt to discredit the government ahead of elections.
However, the minister’s vague response to direct questions on the fund transfer GR has only added fuel to the controversy. Critics argue that if the allegations are indeed untrue, the government must issue transparent clarifications backed by financial records.
As the debate heats up, the state government faces mounting pressure to clarify how it will balance the needs of tribal development with its flagship welfare schemes – especially at a time when public trust and electoral stakes are running high.
