Nearly 10,000 girls in Pune benefit from the Lek Ladki scheme, receiving financial support from birth to adulthood under this state initiative.
Pune, April 11, 2025 — The Lek Ladki scheme, a flagship initiative by the Maharashtra government to support the birth and holistic development of girls, has gained remarkable traction in Pune district. Within a year, close to 10,000 girls have been enrolled, and more than 8,000 beneficiaries have already received the first installment of ₹5,000 directly in their accounts.
The scheme, spearheaded by the Women and Child Welfare Department, provides a total financial assistance of ₹1.01 lakh in phased disbursements from birth until the girl reaches the age of 18. Initially delayed by the 2024 elections, the scheme has since seen rapid implementation.
Key Progress:
- Total Applications in Pune: 9,796
- First Installment Disbursed: 6,573 girls
- Approved, Awaiting Disbursement: 1,676
- Pending Approval: 1,550
Deputy CEO Jamsingh Girase stated, “The Lek Ladki scheme has made an impactful start in Pune. Over 8,000 girls have already received support, and we are processing the rest diligently.”
Ensuring Every Girl is Counted
Pune Zilla Parishad CEO Gajanan Patil emphasized the active role of Anganwadi workers, who have been tasked with ensuring smooth implementation across urban and rural areas. Applications are routed through Anganwadi supervisors and verified by Child Development Project Officers before fund transfers.
A Step Toward Long-Term Empowerment
Officials note that the scheme goes beyond financial relief—it is designed to promote education, health, and independence for girls, helping them pursue higher education and reduce gender-based economic disparities in the long run.
