Pune|14 June,2025: In a tragic accident in Boripardhi, Daund, a 55-year-old farmer became a victim of a lightning strike while toiling in his fields. The accident happened in the late afternoon during an unexpected rain shower, turning an ordinary day of tilling the land into one of destruction. The accident has put the tight-knit rural village in shock, fueling concerns regarding the hazards of capricious weather and raising immediate questions about safety procedures during monsoon.

The farmer, Sanjay Jagannath Jagtap, was working on his flower crop in Plot No. 168/2 when the accident took place. It was about 5 p.m. when he had dropped off his children at the field on his motorcycle and was returning when heavy rain forced him to take refuge by the roadside. In search of protection from the rain, he utilized a plastic sheet to cover himself. In a fateful turn of events, a fierce bolt of lightning hit him in the midst of a thunderous clap, killing him instantly. The impact was so strong that it created a crater one to one-and-a-half feet deep at the location, a graphic reminder of the brute force of nature.

The untimely death has caused shockwaves across Boripardhi, a farming village where agriculture is the cornerstone of everyday life. Sanjay leaves behind a large family, including his wife, two sons, a daughter, brother, sister-in-law, and parents, all grappling with the profound grief of his untimely death. The incident has cast a pall over the community, with residents now wary of venturing outdoors during stormy weather. The crater-like formation at the site is a stern reminder of the dangers of lightning, especially in open fields where farmers work for many hours.

Only two days before, on June 12, another incidence of lightning struck in the same location when lightning set fire to a coconut tree, leaving two young children injured. Luckily, they survived and are being treated at a private hospital in Kedgaon. The two back-to-back mishaps have instilled fear among locals, and now the unpredictability of monsoon rains is the fear factor among the people. People are left wondering how to safeguard themselves from such natural disasters, particularly in rural settings where open fields and scarce shelter expose residents to danger.

The incidents highlight the necessity for enhanced awareness and protection measures to reduce the danger of lightning strikes during the monsoon. While Daund pays tribute to the loss of a diligent farmer, demands are being raised for measures like lightning rods, early warning systems, or awareness campaigns to protect rural areas. The residents of Boripardhi must for the time being remain watchful, their sense of security jolted by the sheer force of nature and the immense loss it has caused.
