Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Ambitious Housing Policy Aiming for 35 Lakh Homes in 5 Years

Maharashtra approved a new housing policy to build 35 lakh homes in 5 years, focusing on affordability, sustainability, and inclusivity, with ₹70,000 crore investment and special focus on slum redevelopment.

Pune | May 21, 2025 :In a major policy move, the Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved a comprehensive new housing policy aimed at constructing 35 lakh houses over the next five years. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held at the Ministry’s Cabinet Hall on Tuesday.

With the slogan ‘Mera Ghar, Nayi Mere Adhikar’, the policy focuses on providing affordable, sustainable, and inclusive housing solutions across urban and rural Maharashtra. The government has earmarked a substantial ₹70,000 crore investment for this mission, targeting the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Lower Income Groups (LIG), and Middle Income Groups (MIG).

Under the policy, priority will be given to slum redevelopment, green housing, and the use of advanced technology to ensure transparency, mobility, and data-driven implementation. The ‘Maha Awas Nidhi’ will also be expanded to ₹20,000 crore to support the initiative.

The policy also emphasises the specific housing needs of senior citizens, women, industrial workers, and students. By 2030, This long-term projected vision aims to make it sure that almost every  citizen has access to safe and sustainable housing

In addition to slum rehabilitation in cities, infrastructure development in rural areas will be accelerated, creating a ripple effect in employment generation and economic growth. The initiative emphasizes collaboration between the central and state governments to ensure smooth execution.

The housing sector has welcomed the policy, seeing it as a transformative step towards inclusive growth and social welfare.
