Pune | August 4, 2025: A shocking case of caste-based violence has come to light from Kharpudi village in Khed taluka of Pune district, where a 39-year-old man was brutally beaten and his wife abducted by her family members and a mob of villagers. The incident, triggered by an inter-caste love marriage, has created a sensation across the region.
The victim, Vishwanath Baban Gosavi, and his wife Prajakta, aged 28, had gotten married in Alandi on August 5, 2024, according to Vedic rituals. However, Prajakta’s family disapproved of the inter-caste union, leading to violence just days before their wedding anniversary.
According to the FIR, on August 3, Prajakta’s two brothers, mother, and nearly 15 to 20 others from the village stormed into Vishwanath’s house. The group brutally assaulted him and his aunt, causing serious injuries. The attackers then forcibly took Prajakta away, despite her being legally married.
A local resident captured the entire incident on video, showing the gang entering the house and kidnapping the woman in broad daylight. The video has now gone viral on social media, prompting widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Following the incident, a case has been registered at the Khed police station against Prajakta’s two brothers, her mother, and 15 unidentified persons. Police have begun investigations under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges related to kidnapping, assault, and unlawful assembly.
The inter-caste dimension of the case has added fuel to the debate around caste-based intolerance and honor-based violence in rural Maharashtra. Locals are demanding strict action against those responsible, while Vishwanath remains under medical care for his injuries.
