Pune| May 28, 2025 : In a significant move to uphold the status of Marathi as a prestigious language, the government has issued a new circular making the use of Marathi mandatory across all central government offices, including banks, insurance companies, and railway stations in Maharashtra. This rule also extends to public transport systems, airports, and online services.

The circular emphasizes that, as per the three-language formula, Marathi must be used alongside Hindi and English in both oral and written communication. District Collectors have been tasked with overseeing the implementation of these instructions.

Usage of  Marathi must be used on all notices, public boards, advertisements, nameplates, and official communications meant for the general public.

All official communication and correspondence with the public—whether written or spoken—must feature Marathi in the Devanagari script. The use of Marathi is mandatory for all public services, both online and offline.

Forms, application documents, public circulars, bank receipts, passenger tickets, and postal documents must all include Marathi.

The regulation is pertinent to the travel and transportation sector as well. Arrival and departure boards at trains, metros, buses, airports, monorails, ports, and even parking areas ought to present information in Marathi. This includes the names of stations along with the counts of vehicles.

Additionally, timetables, nameplates on railway coaches, and other transport-related information must be in Marathi along with the other official languages.

The government has also mandated that Marathi be included in all written and oral recruitment exams conducted for public service roles.

Each central government office must submit a self-declaration letter confirming the implementation of Marathi as per state government instructions. This declaration must be visibly displayed within the office premises.

In essence, the circular reinforces the cultural and administrative importance of the Marathi language in public life and governance, ensuring that state residents can access services in their native language.
