Navi Mumbai youth Sairaj Chavan tragically died after falling into a gorge while trekking at Siddhagad Fort. Rescue teams retrieved his body amid harsh monsoon conditions. Authorities urge caution for trekkers.

Murbad / Mumbai | June 18: The monsoon transforms Maharashtra’s landscapes into lush green havens, luring thousands of nature lovers to waterfalls and trekking spots. But this seasonal beauty can be deceptive—and deadly. A moment of misjudgment can end in irreversible tragedy, as seen in the heartbreaking loss of 20-year-old Sairaj Chavan from Navi Mumbai.

Sairaj had gone trekking to Siddhagad Fort near Murbad with a group of friends. What began as a joyful escape into the hills ended in grief. While climbing, he lost his footing and fell into a deep gorge, reportedly dying on the spot.

As news of the accident reached local authorities, Murbad police quickly sprang into action. They summoned the Della Adventure Team, led by Ganesh Gidh, for a rescue operation. However, nature had its own plans—heavy rain, dense fog, and gusty winds made the recovery mission extremely difficult.

The team had to halt their operation for the night, camping at the base of Siddhagad until weather conditions eased. With the first light of morning and a window of clearer skies, the team resumed efforts and successfully retrieved Sairaj’s body.

Supporting teams from the Help Foundation and Shahapur Lifeguards also assisted in the high-risk rescue. The incident is under investigation by Murbad police.

This tragic incident is a sobering reminder of how recklessness and overconfidence can cost lives, especially in unpredictable monsoon terrains. Authorities have urged trekkers and nature enthusiasts to prioritize safety, follow weather alerts, and never underestimate nature’s might.

Sairaj’s loss has shaken his community and sparked a larger conversation about the urgent need for awareness, preparedness, and caution during monsoon adventures.
