MTech engineer Ashish Reddimalla was arrested in Nagpur for theft. Once a promising software employee, his gambling addiction led to debt, job loss, and eventually crime—leaving police stunned.

June 17, 2025 | Nagpur : A tragic example of how addiction can destroy a promising life has emerged from Nagpur, where police have arrested an MTech-educated engineer who turned to theft to fuel his gambling habit.

The accused, Ashish Reddimalla, was once a rising software engineer working in MIHAN, but today he sits behind bars—his brilliant academic record overshadowed by a string of burglaries. Ashish hails from Ryotwari Colony in Chandrapur and comes from a highly educated family. After completing his MTech, he secured a reputable job in a software company in Nagpur’s MIHAN area.

But then, a phone call changed everything—a seemingly harmless introduction to online gambling turned into a full-blown addiction.

Soon, the mounting debts forced him to make a devastating choice: crime. “He thought he could repay his losses through theft and then quit,” police sources revealed. “But the cycle just got worse.” Ashish, who had been living in Nagpur’s Chhatrapati Chowk area, committed at least five burglaries, targeting locked houses. In each case, he stole valuables and used the money for gambling.

The Dhantoli Police tracked him down after going through 120 CCTV camera footages. His face was identified, and he was arrested from Chandrapur, where he had returned after recent thefts.

Police have recovered:

He had already been arrested twice before, but continued stealing due to his addiction. “He was intelligent, polite, and showed no signs of criminal behavior at first,” said an officer. During interrogation, Ashish told his entire story, and even hardened investigators were stunned.

“We were speechless. An MTech engineer turning into a thief—just to feed an online gambling addiction—it’s a harsh reminder of how dangerous this habit can become,” said a police official.
