To tackle yearly railway flooding, MRVC has launched a ₹877 crore flood prevention master plan with AIIB support. Consultants will study and suggest solutions to protect Mumbai’s train tracks during monsoon.

Mumbai | June 14, 2025: Every monsoon, Mumbai faces the familiar crisis of waterlogged railway tracks, throwing the city’s local train services—its very lifeline—into chaos. To tackle this long-standing issue, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Limited (MRVC) has initiated a major step by preparing a dedicated flood prevention master plan.

MRVC has begun the process of appointing expert consultants who will study the root causes of waterlogging along both Western and Central railway lines. Based on their year-long research, these consultants will suggest long-term, effective solutions. A budget of ₹877 crore has been earmarked for this initiative, which will be executed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3A). The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is providing financial backing.

Despite the existence of natural channels meant to carry rainwater out to the sea, clogged drains, silt accumulation, and unchecked urban growth have worsened flooding in recent years. These conditions lead to frequent service disruptions, inconveniencing lakhs of daily commuters.

Officials say the master plan will focus on improving drainage, preventing silt buildup, and creating sustainable systems to redirect water flow during heavy rains. This season has already exposed vulnerabilities—light showers in May caused waterlogging at Kurla, Sion, and Masjid Bunder, even after pre-monsoon drain cleaning efforts by Central Railway.

The MRVC believes that this structured, science-backed approach could be a turning point in ending Mumbai’s annual battle with flooded train tracks.
