A 40-year-old female English teacher from a prominent Mumbai school was arrested for sexually abusing a 16-year-old male student over a year, using alcohol and anti-anxiety drugs.

Mumbai| July 04,2025: In a shocking case from Mumbai, a 40-year-old female English teacher from a reputed school has been arrested for repeatedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student over the course of a year. The abuse took place at various luxury hotels in South Mumbai and near the airport, where the teacher allegedly plied the student with alcohol and anti-anxiety medication before assaulting him.

The case began in December 2023 during preparations for a school dance group for the annual function, where the teacher developed a close relationship with the student. She allegedly used this connection to groom and exploit him, initiating physical relations in January 2024. The teacher reportedly took the student to secluded locations in her car and luxury hotels for the assaults, which continued for months. The student’s family noticed behavioral changes and, upon inquiry, learned of the abuse, leading to a police complaint.

Mumbai Police arrested the teacher on Saturday under sections 4 (penetrative sexual assault), 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault), and 17 (abetment) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. A female friend of the teacher, who allegedly facilitated the abuse by convincing the student such relationships were normal, has also been booked, though she remains absconding.

On Thursday, the police conducted a psychological evaluation to confirm the teacher’s mental stability, countering potential future claims of mental instability. The evaluation reportedly found her mentally stable. The investigation is ongoing, examining the teacher’s past interactions with other students and her digital footprint for evidence of grooming. The school, which claims it was unaware of the abuse until the arrest, is also under scrutiny to determine if any prior knowledge existed. The teacher, who joined the school during the COVID-19 period after working at another reputable institution, has sparked public outrage, with calls for strict punishment.

For support, victims of sexual abuse can contact the national emergency number 112 or the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s 24-hour helpline at 181 for counseling, legal aid, and shelter referrals.
