Mumbai | June 17, 2025: Mumbai’s chronic traffic congestion may soon find a modern solution on its waters. The city is set to introduce a Water Metro service by December 2026, and the government has instructed concerned authorities to submit the final plan within three months.

A detailed feasibility and technical survey has been conducted by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which was also responsible for India’s first successful Water Metro project in Kochi, launched in 2023. Their report was recently presented to Maharashtra’s Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane on June 16.

Key Features of the Mumbai Water Metro Project:

Officials expect the Water Metro to significantly ease pressure on Mumbai’s local trains and roads, helping thousands of daily commuters reach their destinations swiftly and comfortably.

The initiative is a joint effort by the Central and State Governments, inspired by the success of Kochi’s Water Metro. If timelines are met, Mumbaikars could be commuting over the Arabian Sea in just over a year and a half.
