Nationwide Rollout of DIGIPIN: A New Era in Digital Addressing Begins

DIGIPIN is India’s new open-source digital address system, creating unique codes for precise locations. It adds accuracy without replacing traditional addresses and ensures privacy without collecting personal data

New Delhi | June 11, 2025
India has officially introduced DIGIPIN, a revolutionary open-source digital addressing system, developed through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Posts, IIT Hyderabad, and ISRO’s NRSC. This cutting-edge system divides the entire Indian landmass into a dense grid of 4×4 meter squares, assigning each square a unique alphanumeric code based on latitude and longitude.

DIGIPIN is set to function as a digital layer over traditional addresses without replacing them. While familiar address components like road names, localities, and house numbers will continue to exist, DIGIPIN adds precise geolocation to ensure accurate identification of any spot—urban or rural, remote or central.

Importantly, DIGIPIN does not compromise privacy. It simply maps a geographical point and does not collect personal data, making it a safe and secure tool for individuals and institutions alike.

Citizens can now generate a DIGIPIN for their location by visiting dac.indiapost.gov.in, granting browser access to their location, and clicking on their home point to get a unique location code instantly.

This system is expected to benefit logistics, emergency services, rural planning, and e-commerce by bringing standardized, digital-ready addresses across the country.
