Despite multiple extensions, road widening on the old Pune-Mumbai highway remains incomplete. With monsoon nearing, unfinished sections between Samvidhan Chowk and the egg hatchery raise safety and deadline concerns

Pune | May 15, 2025: With the monsoon fast approaching, the widening work on the old Pune-Mumbai highway remains incomplete, raising concerns among daily commuters and local residents. Key parts of the project—including footpaths, dividers, and service roads within a one-kilometer stretch—are still under construction and moving at a sluggish pace.

The roadwork, covering a three-kilometer stretch from the square near the egg hatchery to Bopodi Chowk, has been ongoing for over a year and a half. Though sections between Bopodi Chowk and Samvidhan Chowk have been widened after acquiring land from the Khadki Cantonment Board and the former Jaihind cinema premises near Khadki railway station, progress between Samvidhan Chowk and the egg hatchery is significantly lagging.

The contractor had been given a deadline to finish the project by the end of March. However, the work remains incomplete even in mid-May, raising the likelihood of another deadline extension by the municipal administration.
This delay not only poses difficulties for commuters but also risks complications during the upcoming monsoon season, when incomplete roads and waterlogging could lead to further safety and traffic concerns.
