Palghar police seized gutkha worth ₹2.5 lakh after smugglers attempted to ram a police van. One accused fled. Under SP Yatish Deshmukh, crackdowns on illegal trade are intensifying.

Palghar | June 13, 2025: The illegal gutkha trade in Palghar district is turning increasingly dangerous. In a recent crackdown, police officers were attacked by smugglers attempting to escape, underlining the growing audacity of the gutkha mafia.

Acting on a tip-off, the Manor police laid a trap on the Warai-Saphale road and intercepted three suspicious vehicles. As officers tried to halt them, one driver rammed a police vehicle in an attempt to flee. While one car managed to escape, police successfully seized two vehicles and gutkha worth ₹2.5 lakh. One suspect has been taken into custody, and search operations are ongoing for the absconding driver.

The incident has raised serious concerns about how fearless the gutkha mafia has become in challenging the law.

Meanwhile, Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh has already placed the force on high alert and instructed strict action against all forms of illegal trade. Since his appointment, the local police have stepped up pressure on smuggling operations, and this raid is being seen as a part of that broader clampdown.
