The ongoing development of the Palkhi Highway in Uruli Devachi has sparked serious safety concerns, as deep excavations and lack of safety measures threaten the lives of daily commuters. The affected stretch lies between Fursungi and Wadki, an area currently witnessing heavy construction and road expansion work.
Danger Lurks on Both Sides of the Highway
With grading and service road construction in progress, unmarked excavation pits line both sides of the road. Residents and commuters report that the absence of barricades, warning signage, and danger lighting has turned this route into a dangerous zone, particularly during nighttime travel.
Several Near-Miss Incidents Raise Alarm
Multiple near-accident incidents have already been reported. Commuters say the deep pits are barely visible after dark, making the stretch particularly hazardous for two-wheeler riders and unaware motorists. The lack of basic safety precautions continues to put lives at risk every day.
Residents Frustrated Over Civic Negligence
Despite filing repeated complaints, local residents allege that the administration has failed to take necessary safety steps. “Excavation work continues without concern for public safety. Even a slight mistake could lead to a fatal accident,” said a resident of Uruli Devachi.
Urgent Need for Preventive Measures
Civic activists and local residents are demanding immediate action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the agencies executing the Palkhi Marg project. Experts are urging the installation of temporary barricades, danger signage, reflective tapes, and illumination to prevent any potential disaster.
This situation reveals a serious lapse in safety oversight and highlights the need for better accountability in infrastructure development, especially on roads that witness daily public movement.
