Farmers from Pargaon and six adjacent villages marched to the Pune Collectorate, passionately opposing the land survey for Purandar airport, claiming they will not give their land for the project.
On Monday April 28, a powerful voice of dissent echoed from Pargaon village all the way to the Pune collector’s office. Farmers and locals from seven Purandar villages, including Vanpuri, Udachiwadi, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Munjavadi, Khanavdi, and Pargaon, got together to organise a protest march opposing the proposed international airport project.
Chetan Dilip Memane, Pargaon’s deputy sarpanch told I was among the crowd when protestors raised their voices with one unified message—“We won’t give up our land.” Carrying banners and slogans, the farmers were unambiguous in their stand: they oppose the land survey and would not allow the government to grab away their fertile soil for an airport.
Rajendra, a farmer whose three acres are at risk, told us emphatically, “We reject this survey. We are marching because our land is our identity, and we will not let it go.”
The deputy sarpanch, recounted how these protests have been occurring for years. “Since the day this airport was announced back in 2016, we’ve made it clear—we are against it. The government’s plan may be big, but our roots run deeper.”
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has proposed acquiring about 2,300 hectares for this project. But as shown today, **the people of Purandar are not ready to bow down without a struggle.
