Metro expansion in Pimpri-Nigdi threatens 162 trees, sparking environmental worries. Community and officials seek balance between progress and nature.

Pimpri, June 25, 2025 – The dream of an expanded metro line in Pimpri-Nigdi is moving forward, but it comes with a heavy heart for nature lovers. the iconic Bhakti-Shakti Chowk. This ₹910.18 crore Phase II project will add stations at Chinchwad, Khandoba Mal Chowk (Akurdi), Tilak Chowk (Nigdi), and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, extending the existing 7.5-km line that already connects Pimpri to Dapodi through six stations.

The proposal, submitted to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Garden Department, follows the removal of 17 trees and has raised concerns among residents who cherish their green surroundings. The community fears the ecological impact of losing mature trees, urging Maha-Metro to explore ways to preserve them. The municipal authorities are carefully reviewing the plan, with the Tree Authority Committee set to discuss it soon. To offset any tree loss, Maha-Metro may need to plant new trees—potentially 20 for each 20-year-old tree removed—and is exploring options to relocate some trees where feasible.

As Pimpri balances its aspirations for modern connectivity with the need to protect its natural heritage, residents hope for a solution that keeps both progress and the environment in harmony.
