PMRDA Inaugurates Road Project to Link Highways, Pilgrimage Centers, and Growth Centers

PMRDA is constructing cement concrete roads to link highways, pilgrimage centers, and urban growth centers. The ₹2,500–3,000 crore project seeks to enhance traffic flow and minimize future maintenance through comprehensive infrastructure.

Pune| May 09, 2025: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated a massive infrastructure project to develop roads connecting national and state highways in the region. These roads will also connect significant pilgrimage centers and rapidly developing urban hubs with the objective of simplifying traffic movement and enhancing regional connectivity. The project, which is ambitious in scale, is expected to cost around ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 crore.

Earlier, PMRDA had planned a development plan that spanned more than 6,000 square kilometers. But the state government later postponed the plan. Then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered the authority to first develop a robust internal road network before making a new development plan. Following this direction, PMRDA prepared a new connectivity strategy aimed at filling the ‘missing links’—the non-connected segments between highways, places of pilgrimage, and areas of development. For long-term durability, PMRDA will be using cement concrete for roads.

This is anticipated to save costs on long-term maintenance and repair. Besides, the project will incorporate necessary utilities like rainwater gutters and cable ducts. This implies that future digging or interference of roads for utility purposes will be minimized, making the whole system more efficient and sustainable.

From a public viewpoint, this effort by PMRDA is a positive move towards creating long-lasting infrastructure that will take care of traffic problems now while also foresightedly accommodating future development. Prioritizing resilient roads and intelligent planning for utilities, the project demonstrates a vision-oriented approach that has the potential to dramatically simplify travel and minimize disruptions for people all over the region.
