Heavy rains crippled Pune’s IT corridor and nearby areas as blocked drains, metro barricades, and potholes turned roads into rivers. Thousands were stranded in waterlogged traffic, while power cuts and tree falls added to the chaos. Poor urban planning and blame-shifting worsened the already dire situation for citizens.

Pune | May 24, 2025: Hinjewadi, Wakad, Kalewadi, and surrounding areas hit hardest; IT workers, residents suffer for hours. Heavy rains wreaked havoc across Panchkroshi, especially in IT hubs like Hinjewadi, Wakad, Kalewadi, and surrounding areas, with knee to waist-deep water turning roads into rivers. The flooding, worsened by metro barricades in Hinjewadi Phase III, choked the natural flow of water from hilly areas, plunging the entire tech corridor into chaos. Thousands of IT employees found themselves stranded in stagnant water for over eight hours, with traffic at a standstill and vehicles stalled or damaged mid-road.
Phase I, II, and III of Hinjewadi, already infamous for pothole-ridden roads, bore the brunt as potholes turned into water pits, adding to commuter misery. Government officials transferred the responsibility, leaving people negotiating a labyrinth of clogged highways and flooded bylanes.
On important roads in Kalewadi, Thergaon, Rahatani, Wakad, and Pimple Saudagar, overflowing gutters and two-foot-deep water rendered regular movement practically impossible. Thanks to blocked drains, the BRT path sank near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk. The absence of timely gutter cleaning simply made things worse.Fallen trees and branches disrupted traffic in several places, with a 100-year-old tree crashing in Panchnath Chowk. Power supply in parts of Nigdi and Akurdi was cut off after rainwater damaged underground cables, leaving residents in the dark.
In Rahatani’s Garmala, Jyotiba, Raigarh, Samata, and Nakhatenagar colonies, muddy lanes caused bikes to skid and made it nearly impossible for people to walk. Gutter water overflowed into lanes in Thergaon Gaonthan, adding to health and hygiene concerns. The Akurdi railway subway was waterlogged, halting traffic completely. With several roads dug up for ongoing development work, water had no place to go, worsening the flooding
