Pune, April 25, 2025: Pune residents are sweating through an unusually intense summer this year, with temperatures climbing to alarming highs much earlier than usual. On Wednesday, Lohegaon recorded a scorching 43.6°C—5.4 degrees above normal—marking the season’s highest temperature so far. Even nights bring little relief, with temperatures staying a stifling 5.9°C above average at 26.6°C.
This isn’t just a passing heatwave. The city has been consistently hotter since January, with each month breaking previous records:
January: 1.2°C above normal
February: 2.2°C above normal
March: Peaked at 37.5°C (2°C higher than usual)
April: Averaged 1.5°C above normal
Shivajinagar has already endured 9 days at or above 40°C—the most since 2020—turning daily life into a struggle. Street vendors report fewer customers, office workers avoid midday commutes, and families ration water amid fears of shortages.
The India Meteorological Department has escalated warnings, upgrading Vidarbha’s heatwave alert to orange—a call for immediate action as the region braces for even higher temperatures. Similar conditions are expected across Central Maharashtra, where hot, humid air will linger for at least another day.
