Devaki Pujari, 22, died by suicide in Pune after repeated dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. Police have registered a case; investigation is ongoing in this tragic incident.

Pune | May 22, 2025: In a very shocking event from Hadapsar, Pune, a young married woman killed her life because of ongoing abuse by her in-laws over dowry expectations. Just 22 years old, the woman turned out to be Devki Prasad Pujari. Her story serves as yet another agonizing reminder of the still-existing, lethal dowry system afflicting Indian society.
The Hadapsar police claim Devaki wed Prasad Chandrakant Pujari on April 18, this year at Basav Mangal Karyalay in Bagewadi, Vijaypur. Devaki’s family spent about ₹10 lakh and presented four tolas of gold for the wedding. The pressures did not stop, though.
Devaki was brought to Pune just one day following the wedding, where her husband Prasad and his family physically and mentally harassed her. Her mother-in-law Surekha, father-in-law Chandrakant, and brother-in-law Prasanna allegedly mistreated her for not include household appliances such a refrigerator and cutlery as part of the dowry.
Devaki had told her father about the abuse and even briefly returned to her mother’s house unable to withstand the pressure and humiliation. Under persuasion from her in-laws, nonetheless, she returned to Pune. She cried and told her father in misery on May 18 that her in-laws were once more mistreating her.
Gurusangappa Maygeri, her father, tried to comfort her and vowed to pay Pune a quick visit to straighten things up. Devaki sadly was discovered hanging at her house the very next day, May 19.
Now registered at the Hadapsar Police Station under pertinent sections of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, is a case. Her husband and three of his family members are under major charges while the inquiry is under progress.The death of Devaki begs serious issues regarding how young women still suffer in silence because of regressive dowry expectations. Her narrative calls for more society change and tougher police enforcement in addition to one of loss.
