Pune Municipal Corporation receives 2 high-tech sewage-cleaning vehicles from the state. PMC to invest ₹95 crore to purchase 13 more, modernizing sanitation under a mechanized system.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a significant step toward mechanized urban sanitation by deploying two advanced sewage-cleaning vehicles, provided by the Maharashtra state government. These vehicles were unveiled on Wednesday at the PMC headquarters in the presence of key officials including Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP, Superintendent Engineer Jagdish Khanare, Santosh Tandale, and Executive Engineer Ajay Vaise.
Mechanized Maintenance: A Government-Driven Initiative
Following directives from the Central Government to replace manual sewage cleaning with mechanized systems, the state government has allocated two specialized vehicles to every municipal corporation and municipality in Maharashtra.
Pune has received:
- One 18.5-ton capacity vehicle
- One 18-ton capacity vehicle
These modern machines are part of a statewide sanitation reform aimed at improving efficiency, reducing manual labor, and ensuring safer working conditions for sanitation workers.
Advanced Features of New Sewage-Cleaning Vehicles
The newly inducted vehicles are of the Suction Cum Jetting with Water Recycle System type. Key features include:
- High suction and jetting capacity for deep cleaning
- Water recycling technology to minimize wastage
- Reduced dependence on manual cleaning
- Increased operational efficiency
The vehicles will be operated on a lease basis for seven years, ensuring long-term service with minimal maintenance burden on PMC.
PMC’s ₹95 Crore Investment in Sanitation Infrastructure
In addition to the two vehicles provided by the state, PMC has announced plans to procure 13 more high-tech sewage-cleaning vehicles using its own funds. This project is expected to cost around ₹95 crore, underscoring the city’s commitment to modernizing sanitation systems and promoting public health.

With these upgrades, PMC is setting an example in transitioning from manual to mechanical urban sewage cleaning. The mechanized approach not only enhances cleaning effectiveness but also aligns with national efforts to ensure safety and dignity for sanitation workers.
