Pune’s Drug Crackdown Intensifies as Police Target Narcotics Sources

Pune Police face pressure to trace drug origins amid a surge in narcotics cases, with recent raids seizing millions in drugs. The ADGP’s orders aim to disrupt supply chains and protect communities from the growing drug menace.

Pune | 25 July, 2025: Pune’s battle against drugs is heating up as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Dr. Nikhil Gupta, has ordered the city’s police to dig deeper into the sources of narcotics flooding the streets. Frustrated by the rising tide of drug use, from mephedrone to opium, the ADGP has called for aggressive action to track down manufacturers and suppliers, urging the use of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) to hit hard at repeat offenders. This push comes as families and neighborhoods grapple with the devastating impact of addiction, yearning for safer communities.

Over the past six months, Pune’s Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) and police have ramped up efforts, seizing drugs worth crores and arresting dozens. From a ₹1.5 crore haul in January, including cocaine and charas, to a July opium bust in Kondhwa Khurd, the crackdowns reveal a city under siege by interstate drug networks. Raids in areas like Koregaon Park and Pimpri-Chinchwad uncovered everything from OG Kush cannabis to methamphetamine tablets, often smuggled from places like West Bengal and Rajasthan. Yet, despite these efforts, the drug trade persists, threatening young lives and straining local resources.

For Pune’s residents, the stakes are personal. Parents worry about teens caught in the grip of addiction, while communities like Hadapsar and Hinjawadi see the fallout of drugs in their streets. The ADGP’s directive emphasizes monitoring released offenders and tracking cross-state dealers to cut off supply chains. The newly launched Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) in Pashan is stepping up intelligence efforts, aiming to dismantle these networks. But for families, the real hope lies in prevention—keeping drugs out of reach and ensuring justice for those fueling the crisis.

The road ahead is tough. With 23 arrests in January alone and ongoing cases under the NDPS Act, the police are stretched thin. The call to update criminal registers and pursue stricter penalties reflects a broader fight to reclaim Pune’s safety. As communities rally for a drug-free city, the ADGP’s orders signal a turning point, urging police to act swiftly to protect the heart of Pune from the shadow of narcotics.
