Pune celebrates completing all 55 Smart City projects worth ₹3,333 crore, transforming urban life with better mobility, sanitation, and digital governance. Maharashtra achieves 95% completion, but 19 projects remain, urging sustained efforts for urban progress.

Pune | 25 July, 2025: Pune’s streets buzz with a new energy as the city proudly marks the completion of all 55 projects under the Smart Cities Mission, a ₹3,333 crore endeavor that has reshaped its urban landscape. From smoother roads to cleaner water and smarter governance, these initiatives have touched the lives of millions, making daily routines easier and more sustainable. As one of Maharashtra’s eight selected cities, Pune stands out with a 100% completion rate, a milestone that reflects years of dedication to improving livability for its residents.

The Smart Cities Mission, launched to modernize urban areas, has brought tangible changes to Pune. Families now benefit from enhanced public transport, reliable water supply, and upgraded social infrastructure like schools and community spaces. Digital tools have streamlined civic services, making it easier for residents to access information and report issues. Neighborhoods feel safer and greener, with projects focusing on energy efficiency and vibrant public spaces. For Pune’s diverse population—students, professionals, and retirees alike—these changes mean a city that feels more connected and responsive to their needs.

Maharashtra’s broader performance is impressive, with 328 of 347 projects worth ₹15,424 crore completed across eight cities, including Solapur, which also achieved 100% completion. However, 19 projects worth ₹1,555 crore remain unfinished in cities like Nagpur and Kalyan-Dombivli, delayed by legal hurdles, land issues, and resource shortages. Sectors like smart energy and social infrastructure boast perfect completion rates, while mobility and sanitation projects lag slightly, reflecting the challenges of coordinating complex urban upgrades.

For Pune’s residents, the completion of these projects is a source of pride but also a reminder of the work ahead. The central government’s decision to end Smart Cities Mission funding by March 2025 puts the onus on local authorities to sustain progress. Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) are now being repurposed to tackle ongoing urban challenges, ensuring Pune continues to evolve. The city’s success inspires hope, showing what’s possible when communities and leaders work together.

As Pune basks in its achievement, the focus shifts to maintaining these gains. Residents dream of a city where clean water, efficient transport, and green spaces remain accessible for all. Maharashtra’s near-complete mission sets a strong foundation, but the unfinished projects remind everyone that urban progress is a shared journey, demanding continued commitment to a brighter, smarter future.
