Pune’s streets are under siege as gangs, often led by minors, vandalize vehicles to assert dominance. Despite police efforts, the city grapples with escalating lawlessness.
Pune,1 July 2025-In 2025, Pune has witnessed a surge in vehicle vandalism, with 41 incidents reported by June 10, leading to 72 arrests, including 40 minors. These young offenders, driven by a desire to become local “bhais” or dons, aim to instill fear and outdo rival groups. Areas like Warje, Yerwada, Sinhagad, Hadapsar, Chatushringi, Wanawadi, Kondhwa, and Chandannagar have become hotspots for such crimes, where vehicles face smashed mirrors, torn seats, and scratched paint.

The motives behind these acts range from personal disputes and gang rivalries to social media-fueled conflicts and, occasionally, political motives. A notable incident on June 10 saw 15 vehicles damaged near Bavanna Chaal at Indira Gandhi Nagar Colony on Sinhagad Road, with vandals targeting two-wheelers in the early hours. Earlier in February, another spree left over two dozen vehicles battered across Upper Indiranagar, Durgamata Garden, Suvarna Mitra Mandal, and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.
Despite a staff-strapped police force, authorities are cracking down with a special campaign targeting these gangs, proposing stringent measures like the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act. Yet, the persistent criminal tendencies among these youths continue to challenge Pune’s safety, leaving residents anxious amid the growing law and order crisis.
