Rahul Gandhi gets time till July 3 to respond in Satyaki Savarkar’s defamation case over remarks on Savarkar; court awaits submission of the cited book used in Gandhi’s statement.

Pune | June 13, 2025: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been granted time by a special court in Pune to file his statement in response to an application submitted by Satyaki Savarkar, who has demanded that a copy of the book cited by Gandhi in his alleged defamatory remarks against Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar be submitted to the court.

Special Judge Amol Shinde issued the order, setting the next date of hearing on July 3.

The defamation case was filed by Satyaki Savarkar, a descendant of the freedom fighter, who alleges that Rahul Gandhi made derogatory remarks about Savarkar during his visit to the United Kingdom. The complaint demands that the book Gandhi referred to while making these remarks be placed before the court as evidence. Satyaki’s counsel, Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in public statements, especially by constitutional office holders.

On behalf of Gandhi, Advocate Milind Pawar sought more time, arguing that Gandhi is currently preoccupied with constitutional duties and public responsibilities, making it difficult to submit the required documents immediately. Pawar also challenged the application made under Section 93 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), claiming that the section was not applicable in this case as it was not in effect when the suit was filed, and thus the complainant had misled the court.

In response, Adv. Kolhatkar countered that the delay appears intentional and accused Gandhi’s side of wasting time to avoid addressing the core issue. The case continues to draw attention due to its political sensitivity and the stature of both the complainant and the respondent.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 3, when the court will review the response and decide on further proceedings.
