Pune, 31 May 2025: In a shocking turn of events, Chief Engineer Baikunth Nath Sarangi of the Rural Works Department, Odisha, tried to dispose of illegal cash by throwing ₹500 notes out of his apartment window as Vigilance officials arrived at his flat in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar. The sudden “rain of notes” stunned even the officials conducting the raid.
Acting on allegations of disproportionate assets, the Odisha Vigilance Department launched simultaneous raids across Bhubaneswar, Angul, and Puri, leading to the recovery of ₹2.1 crore in unaccounted cash. The seized amount included ₹1 crore from the Bhubaneswar flat and ₹1.1 crore from Sarangi’s Angul residence.
The search operation, authorized by a special warrant from the Angul Vigilance Court, involved 8 Deputy Superintendents, 12 Inspectors, 6 ASIs, and several others. Properties under investigation include a two-storey house in Karadgadia (Angul), a flat in Dumduma (Bhubaneswar), and another in Siula (Puri).
Officials had to use currency counting machines due to the massive volume of cash recovered. The vigilance department is now focused on tracing the source of the illicit wealth and evaluating Sarangi’s movable and immovable assets. They emphasize that this is only a preliminary seizure, and the investigation is ongoing.
