Heavy May rainfall has helped Ratnagiri maintain 81.14% water storage in 57 dams, despite reduced overall rain. Rivers remain stable, and key projects like Sheel and Ajurna are completely full.
Ratnagiri | 5 August 2025: Despite receiving less rainfall this year compared to last year, Ratnagiri district’s water reserves remain steady, thanks to intense rainfall during the second half of May. The district currently holds 81.14% water storage across 57 projects, including three medium-scale dams — Natuwadi, Gadnadi, and Ajurna.
In May, continuous downpours for nearly 13 days helped fill 43 out of 57 dams, even though 14 projects are currently non-operational and not storing water. Last year, water storage stood at 81.25%, slightly higher than this year’s levels. However, officials state the minimal drop has not affected water availability.
Stable River Levels and Dam Capacities
The water levels in the district’s eight major rivers also remain stable, aided by sporadic but heavy night rainfall through August. With more showers expected till September, the situation is projected to improve further.
Project-Wise Water Storage Overview:
- Total water stored: 368 million cubic meters (81.14%)
- Last year’s storage: 369.63 million cubic meters (81.25%)
- Natuwadi Medium Project (Khed): 18.377 MCM (67.49%)
- Gadnadi Medium Project (Sangameshwar): 6.223 MCM (51.17%)
- Ajurna Medium Project (Rajapur): 72.560 MCM (100%)
- Sheel Dam (Ratnagiri City): 100% full with 3.3 MCM capacity
The four-month monsoon period (June–September) typically brings around 3364.22 mm of rainfall to Ratnagiri district. While the current season saw a reduction in total rain, early and intense May showers have kept the dam levels reassuringly high.
